I’m loving the self-described ‘dustbowl’ look that verhext achieved by combining her little 90’s floral frock with a simple newsboy cap and lace-up oxfords.
I like the mix of soft brown hues as well as the contrasting elements: the feminine dress combined with the menswear inspired hat and shoes, the modern vibe of her tattoos mixed with the old timey feel of the outfit, and even her short cropped hair with the long dangly earrings. I'm a big fan of outfits that have unexpected little twists while appearing cohesive as a whole and this is a fine example.

Compelled to do a bit of inspiration searching, I came across this breathtaking compilation of stark and poignant images of Dust Bowl refugees from the Dorothea Lange Collection at The Library of Congress.
The way she captured the beauty within the sadness is just so incredibly striking...

There are some really poignant images in that sequence! That combination of sadness and beauty is similar to the feeling expressed in a lot of the blues and folk music of the time so the soundtrack is perfect.
Thanks for the poignant video. My mom spent part of her childhood in Vidal, CA, down by the Colorado River in the 1930’s. Her dad was a barber and went looking for work there as men were working on a Works Progress dam, as I recall. Both my mom and grandmother described the canvass-sided , dirt-floor home they had, just like in the photos. My grandma told me she swept the tarantulas out everyday. It’s thanks to these photojournalists that we have these images today as I have very few pictures of my mom’s family during this time as they were obviously dirt poor.
No way I am just reading The Grapes of Wrath right now and the dust bowl images fit the novel so perfectly!
