Color Scheming
Tuesday, September 6, 2011
Well, halo there.
Hey, remember when I used to show y'all what I was wearin'? How 'bout a lil' outfit for ol' times sake?
necklace: swap gift from Lauren
tee: clothing swap
jeans: thrifted
boots: thrifted
I recently received a package filled with loveliness from my girl Milla. This adorable smock was among the many treasures tucked inside. It felt like the perfect thing to wear berry pickin' with Clover on Labor Day :)
At the fountain downtown before our berry picking excursion. My little girl is growing up you guys. She's one of the "big kids" now at her pre-school and I was informed today that she is blossoming into quite the little ring leader. Apparently, she's got herself a pack of two-year olds following her around doing whatever she says!
The fruits of our Labor Day. Just enough blackberries for a pie, and a super yummy pie it was. We ate half for dessert tonight still warm from the oven with vanilla ice cream.
Hey, remember when I used to show y'all my thrift finds? How 'bout a few of those too? You know, for ol' times sake...
I guess you could say I've been lucky with leather this summer. Perfectly worn, honey-hued leather. Those cowboy boots... simple, flat-heeled, round-toed... I have been dreaming of those very boots for YEARS!
A certain pair of vintage brown corduroy overalls should really be included among this line-up of favorites too, but we'll save those for another outfit post.
Don't I look saintly with my halo? I swear, I did not photoshop that in. Just call me Our Lady of the Thrifty Heart ;) Blessings of magical thrifting mojo to all!

River House

Our friends Julianne and Luis, who spent last weekend at a house along the Russian River for Luis’ birthday, invited us and a few other friends over on Saturday afternoon to hang out in this lovely and peaceful spot.
The above photo is looking out at the river from one of the house’s two raised back porches. The lighting and the fact that everything is green including the river itself makes it a bit hard to see the river in the photo but it’s there if you look closely. There was a trail from the house down to a tiny private beach where we chilled out with some beers and watched Clover being very stoked about playing in the water.
Our friends Ben and Julia (you may recall them from the Joan Jett concert the night before) and Mike and Lisa arrived after finishing a 10-mile canoe trip down the River. While the trip was supposed to be pretty leisurely, no scary rapids or anything, Ben and Julia somehow managed to flip their canoe, not once, but twice, along the way! Hence, the contents of Ben’s wallet all laid out to dry and even though there was debate between them as to who was at fault for said flippings, there were clearly no hard feelings in the end, aw :)
Did you spot Lucas and Clover lounging on the hammock?
I caught Clover doing a little interpretive(?) dance as Luis strummed his guitar a bit out on the porch.

Moving over to the other porch, we enjoyed an awesome BBQ dinner accompanied by a bunch of yummy salads and more refreshing beer. Luis hails from the town of Santa Maria, nicknamed the BBQ Capitol of California, where they boast their own original style of BBQ. Needless to say, when he BBQ's it's always super good. Did you notice I even managed to include myself in the group shot, can you spot me?I wore the same outfit on Sunday, another gorgeous day spent mostly lazing around the homestead, no need for shoes! I added some tiny flowers from the yard to my hair by twisting two pieces in front and pinning them back then just sticking the little stems into my twisted hair. Voila, faux daisy chain! I love that I caught the look on Clover’s face after biting into one of the totally unripe plums that I kept telling her to stop eating.
By the way, that little vintage dress she’s wearing is red velvet, she calls it her “Christmas dress,” and I tried to talk her into wearing something a little more hot-as-heck weather appropriate but on this one she just wasn‘t budging, sometimes you’ve got to choose your battles with these stubborn wee ones ;)
Here’s a close-up of the little floral skirt, which I found last week on half-off day at the Salvation Army ($1.50). It turned out to be my lucky day in the florals department too. I also found a super cute dress that I can’t show you because it’s going into Milla’s next package of goodies and then as I was flipping through the crowded dress rack, I may have actually gasped when I came across this beauty… Mixed blue florals, ribbon and lace trim… oh my! Looking closely, you can tell that it was handmade, and beautifully so, no tags, I’m guessing from a Gunne Sax pattern as this dress has Gunne written all over it. Only $3.50 too, I love half-off day!
I also found two sweet little dresses for Clover ($1.50 each). She totally fell in love with the crochet one, as did I, and the corduroy jumper with tiny ruffles and flowers is super adorable too.
Ok, now back to the best dress I’ve come across in a long while... a view of the tie in back and a detail shot of the bodice, I love the delicate lace trim along the neckline and the tiny white rose-shaped buttons attached to the ribbon. This dress was obviously made with much care and love and it’s still in really great shape. Alright, I’ll stop gushing...Wishing you all a joyful weekend!

Sunshine and Saltwaters

At the thrift store on Tuesday, not only did I find the most wonderful wooden 1930’s swivel chair for my desk ($20!), I also, to the delight of Clover and her cousin Lucia, came home with mini versions of my beloved Saltwater sandals!
I just happened to be wearing mine when I found them and returned home to find the girls playing together at the house. Both pairs were a perfect fit and they were SO excited that we all had matching sandals, it was pretty adorable.
I followed the girls into the backyard and snapped some photos while they played in the willow tree. They were too cute in their floral dresses and matching pigtails, and in other cute news…

Eep! Or should I say cheep? Say hellow to our four new feathered friends!
These lil' ladies (fingers crossed we don't have a rooster in the mix) are amazingly soft, fit right in the palm of your hand, are practically weightless, make the sweetest little "cheep cheeps", and will randomly fall asleep out of nowhere, alot, seemingly active then all of a sudden head slowly droops, eyes close… aaand napping, they do it standing up too, it‘s so funny to watch, like fuzzy little narcoleptic balls of cute they are. Needless to say, we are smitten :)

Trifecta!
Half-off day at the Salvation Army was good to me this week... REAL GOOD...
Round-toed brown leather ankle boots, on my wish list. ($4) I love the buckles!
Vintage 70’s leather clogs, wish list toppers (apparently I‘m not immune to clog mania), the brand is Skandals, they’re Sweedish! ($4)
And these (eep!) now THESE… I tell ya, had I been wearing socks, they would have been KNOCKED OFF! I’ve been pining for a pair of Salt Water sandals for years now, MANY years in fact. They weren’t even on my thrifting wish list because I honestly never thought I’d find a pair, let alone in practically pristine condition, my exact size AND the very color I wanted for a whopping $4!!!Not to mention, just the other day I was admiring this adorable outfit and thinking to myself, I’ve really gotta get me a pair of Salt Waters this summer for reals. DONE! Now I’ve just gotta find the perfect pair of overalls to cut-off ;)
I wore the sandals for the first time yesterday with this 100% thrifted outfit. The vintage woven bag has the sweetest little yellow flowers on the front and was recently gifted to me by Lucas’ mom.
Oh, and as if all the amazing shoes weren’t enough, the thrift gods decided to throw down this perfect vintage grandpa cardigan (with suede elbow pads!) for $2.50. There’s a fancy lining under the cable knit and some old man must have really loved this sweater because there are actual holes worn into the elbows that were mended with yarn underneath the pads, not sure why that gets me so much, but it does.
We’re heading over to my mom’s place this afternoon for some early Mother’s Day celebrating with all my sisters and their families. A lovely weekend to all, especially all the mamas out there!

Dream Dress
After dropping Clover off at pre-school this morning, I pulled up to one of my favorite thrift stores to find a dress on display in the front window that is nothing short of an absolute dream vintage wedding dress. One of the ladies working saw me taking pictures and came out to tell me about it.
Apparently, a woman in her 70’s brought it in. It was her mother’s wedding dress in 1930. She also brought in the golden yellow one on display with it, the dress she herself got married in, in Vegas in the 1950’s.
Inside was this dress, from 1960, which was worn by the woman’s daughter to her prom… three generations of dresses!
Oh, but it was this beauty that stole my heart. She let me have a better look at it once we were inside and it appeared to be in wonderful condition. So simple and elegant but with such sweet details…
The peek-a-boo shoulders were my favorite, lined with little flowers that are hard to see in the pics, and the ruffles, oh the ruffles… *sigh*.
I didn‘t try it on, but it looks like it just might be a perfect fit, which is kind of killing me, being that I’m already happily married, and can’t for the life of me imagine when I would ever have the opportunity to wear such a dress, obviously not to someone else’s wedding! The price tag is $85, which seems like an amazing deal, but not really something I can justify for wearing around the house to play dress up. Any vintage sellers out there have an idea of what this dress might actually be worth?
I did find a few little goodies to take home though: a 70’s hippie top with quilted bib detailing, a vintage 70’s I. Magnin pale pink nightgown with crochet lace trim (which I plan to wear as a dress), $4 each, and a box of 50 vintage Audubon Western Birds of North America cards for $2, which helped, but I’m still kinda pining over that dress, ah well…

A' thriftin' I will go
It's been forever since I've done one of these posts, so I thought I'd share some recent finds:

The blouse had some button issues, but I was able to find these three floating around in a button bin and I think they'll make pretty decent replacements.

I do have one more find to share, but this one deserves a post all its own, so stay tuned!
