The Easter Dress

IMG_7808

Our Easter ended up being very similar to last year's flurry of activity: homemade lattes, baked goods, and a spirited early morning egg hunt for the neighborhood kiddos at my sister-in-law's house across the street, followed by a quick appearance at the annual Easter party at Clover's pre-school, then off to spend the afternoon at my mom's house for a delicious lunch and yet another egg hunt for Clover and her cousins. Sounds super relaxing doesn't it?

Well, at least this year, in celebration of the glory of Spring, I did manage to toss the perfect Easter dress into the mix. Thanks to Heather! It was part of the birthday bundle she gifted to me during her surprise visit.

As you can see, Clover has no shortage of neighborhood playmates. It's all about those little smiling faces!

Lucas chatting with his mom, Oosa, and her husband, Geoff. You can see where he gets his wonderful smile. True story, back when I first introduced him to my parents (about a million years ago) my dad's first impression of him was that he had "a warm and genuine smile" :)

My sister Val took the dress photos in front of the wisteria in my mom's backyard. Our own is just beginning to bloom.

Hunting for eggs at Grandma's house. Gotta love the bare tights in the dirt, no wonder she goes through them so quickly.

Ah, fluttery goodness ♥

Clover wore the Peter Rabbit dress we picked up at the White Elephant Sale. Here she is post-egg hunt with Val's daughters, Riley and Alana, and my mom's kitty in the background.

Clover also wore a little embroidered and beaded cardigan that was recently handed down from her cousin Lucia. It originally belonged to Lucas' sister Kelcey's daughter Chiara, who is now about to graduate from high school!

It still has Chiara's name written on the tag. After making its way through all the nieces, it's now Clover's turn. I love how so many of her clothes have family history and it's fun that when her aunties see her wearing these items, they get a sweet reminder of the days when their own little girls wore them.

Mazzy Star update? It was an amazing night! Lovely ladies galore. I went with my dear friend Angelina and it was so much fun for us to get a rare night out together without the kidlets. We met up with a few other lovely lady friends and after a few missed connections, finally found my sweet friend Julianne and her awesome clan of sisters at the end of the show. Julianne took this shot of Angelina and I with the sisters out in front of the Mystic as the night was winding down.

The show itself was mesmerizing, Mystic indeed. I could listen to that woman's haunting voice paired with those dreamy guitar driven melodies all night. Kaleidoscopic imagery projected onto the stage brought a psychedelic texture to the atmosphere and amplified the mood in a way that made it easy to become pleasantly engulfed by the whole experience, and I only had two beers!

Hope was as stunning as ever in her dark otherworldly way, and true to form, did not attempt to engage the audience in any way other than a beautifully soulful performance of each tune. To the contrary, her few spoken words between songs were only to request less brightness and more silence.

I wish I had read that article before seeing her live. Reportedly, trying to block out the audience as much as possible is how she deals with the stage fright that comes with intense shyness. That being her first live performance in quite a while, it must have been pretty nerve wracking. Between songs she appeared seemingly aloof and almost bored. It was a bit hard to know what to make of her demeanor without prior knowledge of her extreme discomfort with live performance.

Though her guardedness is intense and personal connection with her audience is not a priority, I will say that seeing her live is still totally worth it! They sounded AMAZING. She's described how blocking everything else out on stage allows her to "get inside the music" and if you're lucky enough to witness it, she'll take you along with her. There's a captivating sense of depth and melancholic beauty behind her voice, and you get the sense that what she's guarding of herself might just be a little bit magic.

Starry Starry Night

Mazzy Star is back together and kicking off their tour right here in sleepy ol' Sonoma County of all places. Lucky me, I've got tickets to tonight's sold out show at the Mystic Theatre in Petaluma. SO EXCITED!!!

If you've been around awhile, you may recall me mentioning my deep love for Hope Sandoval's style. So inspiring. Oh little plaid skirt in this video... my wardrobe needs you!

This is one of the two new songs (their first in 15 years!) they released back in October. I quite like it. Rumor has it there's an album to come out later this year. Well, here's to a beautiful Mazzy Starlit night! I'm so prepared to be STARstruck... alright, I'll stop ;)

P.S. My next birthday surprise post is in the works, sorry I'm so slow with these things! A hippety hoppity Easter weekend to you dear ones :)

*smitten*

Clover and I saw Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers play last night at a local radio station's free outdoor concert. I was too busy cuddling with my girl and being spellbound by Nicki's beautiful voice to take pictures, but I found these gorgeous photos by feather love photography for your viewing pleasure :)

We'll be off to Guerneville soon for a peaceful stroll under the towering redwoods at Armstrong, followed by the opening of our niece Chiara's first solo art show tonight.

Tomorrow some friends of ours (remember the whiskeydrunk cycles guys?) are putting on a free community event to celebrate mustaches and bicycles (love this town) with bicycle-themed art, food & drink, the whiskeydrome, great live music, and a mustache competition, all on top of a downtown Santa Rosa parking garage with free valet bike parking. Should be fun!

Hope you all have some fun stuff planned for the weekend too :)

Go and Sing to the Mountain, Go and Sing to the Moon

Dressed to Dance

My outfit for a very special Sunday evening… a favorite floral frock (thrifted) and my glorious new Minnetonka Moccs from my girl Amber’s magical Etsy shop of beautiful bohemian wonders, Violet Folklore! I promise a better view of these lovelies in my next outfit post. Of course I topped it all off with my favorite hair accessory, the lovely leather leaf clip made by my darling Millakin!

Now, why was my Sunday evening so special, you ask?…

Moonsong sisters reunite! My lovely ladykins, Heather and Amber, picked me up following a long drive out from the foothills and we were off for an incredible night full of beer drinking, soul-nourishing music and dancing, and all-around fun-filled sisterly shenanigans at Hopmonk Tavern in Sebastopol!

Our evening began with a tasty double IPA which we toasted with love to our dear Milla, who we held close in spirit throughout the night. So much so that it was as if she were right there with us at times… turns out she was up on the stormy shores of her island doing just the same :)

Heather brought Amber and I the most thoughtfully assembled gift bags full of all manner of treasures which we opened together as the sun went down on the biergarten… so much thrifty gifty goodness… it will need a post all its own!

Heather has already described this evening so perfectly. Rather than try to improve upon perfection, I’m just gonna show some of my pics from our jubilant night and direct you on over to her post (if you haven’t already been) for all the glorious details…

…not to mention, several more classy bathroom outfit shots!

Ah, Elephant Revival, the band whose blissful music is responsible for bringing us girls back together so soon! I will also send you over to Milla’s post for her beautiful portrayal (she saw them play just the Sunday before!) of this band that is so dear to her heart, and for such good reason as we now know from experience! On with the pics…

Dancin'

The three of us danced unabashedly front and center the entire time they played! Completely caught up in our gleeful haze, it wasn’t until near the end of the show, when Bonnie began wooing us all with her beautiful saw playing (she also plays the washboard and has a voice straight from the heavens, by the way) that I realized I hadn’t taken any pictures and rushed over to grab my camera.

Instruments of Beauty

There was plenty of fiddle wooing going on by the lovely Bridget as well :)

Such a wonderful show it was!

Completely smitten, we reeled the lovely Bridget and Bonnie into our happy little group after the show with some girl talk in the ladies room, followed by…

A lively little impromptu Tom Waits dance party!

Huggin'
We all got hugs from the girls, then reluctant to end our perfect evening…

Hung around a bit longer and were treated to Dango’s spirited story of how he came by his beautiful antique stand-up bass... it’s all in Heather’s post, along with a bonus image of Amber expressing her heart-felt appreciation for said beauty of a bass ;)

Oh, what an unforgetable night! SO MUCH FUN!!!
