Hot Days and Beach Trivia

It’s been super HOTTTT! Yesterday afternoon we drove out to the coast to spend some time in a more comfortable climate. I couldn’t wait to kick off my shoes and frolic around in the cool wet sand.

I thrifted this vintage handmade dress from the Goodwill about a month ago. I think it was $6. Anyhow, it’s proving to be the perfect little loose-fitting item to throw on when it’s really hot outside and I don’t even want to think about putting an outfit together.

Goat Rock beach is known for all the pretty multi-colored rocks that wash up on shore.

Trying to beat the heat.

I’ve been wearing my hair up in a little top knot because of the heat. I’m enjoying the novelty of my new bangs. Incase anyone’s wondering, I had enough length cut off to get rid of the funky ends and got some layers but it’s still long. The longest layers still go past the middle of my back. I’m a long hair girl through and through :)

Goat Rock is also known for the arched rock formation prominently visible from the beach.

AND it’s known for being featured in the eighties kid’s film classic The Goonies! :D

On by, on by...

My friend Julianne made this fun time lapse video by putting together sequenced photos she took throughout our day at the Harmony Festival. I think she did a wonderful job of capturing the overall experience of the day, thanks Julianne for letting me post it!

Oh, and because I'm sure you're all wondering, the answer is no... no I've not been professionally trained in the art of hula hooping ;)

1. How perfect would those lavender sunnies be with my new hat?! Too bad they've already sold :(

2. I think this little woodblock village is so sweet and charming. Perfectly displayed in front of artwork in complimentary colors too!

3. The perfect leather cross-body bag has been holding firm at the top of my wishlist for some time now. I'd snap up this beauty in a heartbeat!

How does your garden grow?

big flowers, little flowers

I have somewhere along the line fallen into the habit of unintentionally coordinating Clover's outfits with mine or mine with hers depending on which of us is dressed first. We never totally match, our outfits are just sort of attuned to one another you could say. I swear I'm not doing it consciously though! Anywhoo, just an observation.

As I mentioned previously, I've been loving tiny floral prints. I dream of thrifting some vintage liberty goodness, something along these lines would be just lovely!

Until that happens I'm making do with this cute little Old Navy top I found at the Welfare League Thrift for 2 bucks. I do love the colors in the print and the sweet pintuck detailing.

When I saw the two flowers from
Lauren's swap package sitting on my bedside table, I just knew they needed to join the outfit. They are the exact colors as the flowers in the print, so into the unruly hair* they went! Hey that rhymes :)

Speaking of flowers, how gorgeous is this sunflower that just burst open at the entrance to our little vegetable garden?

Said garden, consisting of a large raised bed with tomatoes, squash, peppers, and beans, and a small bed with more beans and various herbs. It's definitely my favorite spot in our yard right now.

I wish I could take credit for its beauty. While I do help with the choosing of plants and where to put them, Lucas does all the real work and definitely deserves the credit. He is the green thumb in this little family for sure and we're lucky to have him!

The summer squash plants have been growing like crazy. They are getting seriously huge and it's becoming quite obvious that soon we're going to have more scalloped and crook necked summer squash than we know what to do with!

Yesterday evening while Lucas was watering, I collected our first little harvest (see, I help). Aren't they pretty?! Recipe suggestions much appreciated :)

Some of the green beans are starting to produce as well. You can't see it but that's what Clover is munching on in this photo. From the looks of it we'll be enjoying those too!

*The outfit was from a few days ago, the unruly hair has since been cut, stay tuned...

Peace, Love and Punk Rock

Harmonious Attire

Jumpsuit! I wore it on Sunday morning to the flea market where I picked up this floppy sunhat for 5 bucks. When I tried it on, and I kid you not, the lady selling it exclaimed: “If Aphrodite were to rise up from the sea THAT is the hat she would be wearing!” I doubt it, but… SOLD.

I had been on the lookout for just such a hat and the fact that this one was the exact shade of pale lilac to match my floral print perfectly told me that it was meant to be. Besides, I had a hippie festival to go to that afternoon and had been feeling like something was missing. This added just the right amount of 70’s flair to my decidedly 90’s jumpsuit.

Ah, the Harmony Festival… it was a beautiful day and the scent of patchouli and burning sage (among other burning odors one might expect to encounter at such an event ;) were heavy in the air. We went with a group of friends and a good time was had by all.

I snuck off on my own while Clover napped in her stroller, to wander around and take some pictures. As you may have noticed, I was quite smitten with all the teepees.

I’ve decided to make it a summer project to put up a little makeshift one for Clover (alright, it’s for me but she’ll love it too) in our backyard using bamboo poles and thrifted vintage sheets. Something along the lines of
this :)

There were more hippie wares and hippie style than you could shake a peace pipe at. I came across the girl in white in the “Goddess Grove” of all places and she struck me as especially lovely and ethereal with her hair all back lit. I love her tote and shoes too.

We staked out a spot on the lawn on the outskirts of Crafters Village right next to the Hula Hoop Garden. With
Matisyahu doing his thing on the main stage in the background, some of us couldn’t help but partake in some good ol’ fashioned hippie hoopin:

Our friends Angelina and Christian hoopin it up hardcore.

Yours truly looking ridiculous trying to keep the world’s largest hula hoop going.

Clover never really got the hang of it but she looked damn cute trying!

I don’t know who this kid was but, as his pants would indicate, he was indeed on fire. I wish I had thought to get video of him. He was so good!

Historically, the Harmony Festival has been a weekend long celebration of all things hippie/eco/tribal/new age… yada yada yada. This year though, they decided to throw the Eco Cup Skate Competition into the mix complete with giant ramp, pro skaters, graffiti artists, and a stage featuring live music including performances by a couple of legendary punk bands Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains, anyone? There was a bit of a Woodstock meets Warped Tour vibe going on, which turned out to be pretty awesome.

Getting to watch pro skaters and see 80’s hardcore rasta punk band Bad Brains (favorites from my skateboarding obsessed youth) was like taking a time machine straight back to high school… only with a toddler attached to my hip. The 16 year old me was in heaven and almost certainly thinking… cute kid but whoa, what’s with the jumpsuit?

Clover, earplugs firmly in place and a safe distance from the mosh pit... of course, got to experience her first punk show and while she was holding on to me, and kitty, pretty tight in the beginning, by the end she was smiling and shaking her little fist to the music… quite a sight!

They’re a bunch of old guys now, but here’s Bad Brains back in the day taking it down a notch with a live cover of The Beatles’ Day Tripper… gotta love those 80’s crowd shots :)

100% Thrifted Pick (6.17.09)

, originally uploaded by eyeliah.
Ah, those colors! Not only are eyeliah’s floral sundress and airy cardigan completely adorable individually, but together they are that perfect combination of soft teal blue and cotton candy pink that for whatever reason I find myself completely drawn to in the springtime. I really love the way she accented with the matching light leather belt and shoes too. Such a pretty look overall.

For more fabulous fully thrifted outfits check out the
100% Thrifted flickr group :)

My gravitation toward soft pinks mixed with anything in the soft blue/teal family happened last Spring as well, and I’ve noticed it popping up quite a bit in my flickr faves. So, without further ado, I’d like to share some inspiring images featuring this color combo:
