"I got my expression back in high school, when I started to get into thrift shopping. In Texas, in the nineties, thrift shopping was pretty good – stuff was like 25 cents. Everyday, after school, we’d just go thrift shopping and then we’d just go home and play with it or cut it up and all that kind of stuff."

Thanks friends, for indulging my recent questions on style and comfort. I thoroughly enjoyed reading all the responses and found them so interesting!

Among the different motivating factors that play into how we dress ourselves, I recall several mentions of how important mood is to the whole equation, which is SO TRUE. For example, plain and simple aside, at the moment, my mood has me longing to swap closets with this lovely gal!

Also, she kinda reminds me a bit of our very own style queen, Nicole, who I would also gladly swap closets with in a hot second ;)

You can visit Stylelikeu to see Miss KK's interview and peep more of her dreamy closet :)

The big news around here is that Clover made it through her first week of Kindergarten!!! I know, how did this happen, right?! Well, somehow it did and she is lovin' it and ADORES her teacher. Needless to say, we are thanking our lucky stars that the transition has, at least so far, been a smooth one :)

Ok, now back to work on part 2 of our summer road trip!

Starry Starry Night

mazzy-star-238334

Mazzy Star is back together and kicking off their tour right here in sleepy ol' Sonoma County of all places. Lucky me, I've got tickets to tonight's sold out show at the Mystic Theatre in Petaluma. SO EXCITED!!!

If you've been around awhile, you may recall me mentioning my deep love for Hope Sandoval's style. So inspiring. Oh little plaid skirt in this video... my wardrobe needs you!

This is one of the two new songs (their first in 15 years!) they released back in October. I quite like it. Rumor has it there's an album to come out later this year. Well, here's to a beautiful Mazzy Starlit night! I'm so prepared to be STARstruck... alright, I'll stop ;)

P.S. My next birthday surprise post is in the works, sorry I'm so slow with these things! A hippety hoppity Easter weekend to you dear ones :)

*smitten*

Clover and I saw Nicki Bluhm and the Gramblers play last night at a local radio station's free outdoor concert. I was too busy cuddling with my girl and being spellbound by Nicki's beautiful voice to take pictures, but I found these gorgeous photos by feather love photography for your viewing pleasure :)

We'll be off to Guerneville soon for a peaceful stroll under the towering redwoods at Armstrong, followed by the opening of our niece Chiara's first solo art show tonight.

Tomorrow some friends of ours (remember the whiskeydrunk cycles guys?) are putting on a free community event to celebrate mustaches and bicycles (love this town) with bicycle-themed art, food & drink, the whiskeydrome, great live music, and a mustache competition, all on top of a downtown Santa Rosa parking garage with free valet bike parking. Should be fun!

Hope you all have some fun stuff planned for the weekend too :)

self-styled

self-styled

I'd show you what I wore to storytime this week, but it really just paled in comparison.

P.S. - Remember those awesome tie-dyed leggings from my previous post?... Go here to be tutorialed (it should be a word) on how to make them, by the designer herself! Thanks for the tip Alexa!

Hope Springs Eternal: Portrait of a 90's Style Icon

With her dark ethereal beauty and angelic voice, Hope Sandoval, frontwoman of the dreamily psychedelic 90’s band Mazzy Star, could have probably gotten by wearing nothing but the proverbial burlap sack and still be considered one of, if not the, coolest chick ever to have held a tambourine on stage or anywhere else for that matter.

Thankfully, she forewent the sack route to instead cultivate a style that I happen to find nothing short of glorious and it amazes me how well her style translates through the years. I have yet to find an image of her that looks dated… no small stylistic feat for someone in the 90’s spotlight.

Seriously, this woman leaves me awestruck...

Thrift Style Icon: Enid from Ghost World

I recently re watched the 2001 film Ghost World with Thora Birch as Enid the outsider art student. From her coke-bottle glasses to her combat boots, this girl is the epitome of what thrift style is all about, being unique and creative and most importantly having fun. With her flair for eclectic vintage and dry sarcastic wit she's definitely a girl after my own heart!

She was also the inspiration behind the much loved Luella Spring/Summer 08 collection:

Leaving you with this unedited version of the dazzling dance number from the 1965 Indian film Gumnaam, featured during the opening credits in Ghost World:

This makes me want a shiny dress layered with fringe and ruffles, in which to dance masked and with reckless abandon... SUCH MOVES!!!

Thrift Style Icon

Molly Ringwald as Andie Walsh in the 1986 classic Pretty in Pink. The poor girl with a penchant for pink may have been from the wrong side of the tracks, but she puts those richies to shame with how stylish she is.

When she worked her magic on that frilly pink prom dress... pure perfection!

And I do believe she was The early pioneer of Granny Chic.

This movie is so great... the clothes... the music... the Duckster... Iona's hair... the pink... love it... all of it!
