Today's Outfit: Romper Bloom

Ok, so maybe I was a bit hasty in bidding farewell to Summer just yet. It was a gorgeous day today with temperatures reaching the upper 80's and the same forcasted for tomorrow. Since it was too warm for most of my new finds, I decided to pull out the ol' romper.

With the above Built by Wendy dress in mind, I searched my closet to no avail for a suitable skirt to layer over the bottom half of the romper. Then I gave this vintage skirt with the crazy bright flowers and confetti(?) print a second look because it happens to be the only black skirt I own. I was in no way expecting it to work.

To my surprise, when I put it on, the whole thing ended up looking like a dress! I added the Guatemalan belt because the colors were so similar to those in the skirt and I think it helps with the whole dress illusion, distracting from the separation of the two pieces. Again, these Rocketdogs are the only black flats I own and the colors in the embroidery just happened to be right.

This made me think about how this methodology comes into play for me often when I'm putting together an outfit. I usually start out with a particular article of clothing (in this case the romper) and then go from there. Unexpected combinations often come about because I simply don't own what I would originally think to pair with something and end up trying whatever I happen to have that might work based on color, texture, or shape.

For example, in my last outfit post, I started off with the tapestry skirt and that Pixies tee shirt was the only top I could find with a color and fit that would work with the skirt. By no means did I wake up that morning and think, hmm... I'd like to wear my new tapestry skirt today, I think it would be really cool paired with my old Pixies tee that I haven't worn in years.

So there's a little peak into my sartorial thought process. It's the old "necessity is the mother of invention" method that usually leads to my more creative outfits, which often turn out better than what I would have come up with if only I owned things like a basic black pencil skirt... though I really should get one of those ;)

You really do look fantastically pretty in this outfit - I love the pattern mix and the colours!

I'm feeling a wee bit of romper inspiration coming on...

This outfit is such a burst of color! It just makes me smile, and cheered my gloomy day greatly. Just to let you know, there's a little package being assembled for you, a final Finnish package that is, before you'll start receiving Washingtonian parcels. The move is getting closer, eep!

Aargh how lovely. I can't believe it's not a dress. And how perfectly the shoes match.
Very impressed.
You look lovely :)

fab outfit - what a brainwave to layer over a romper - you've given me food for thought thanks! can totally relate to ur approach to creating your daily outft - its usually the hasiest thrown together creations that are the best. i also tend to start with one item and go from there constrained by what is clean, weather appropriate, and colour texture era/mood etc. getting an outfit wrong can somehow really put a downer on the day - however getting it right sets the foundation for a great day! bet you had a corker in that getup xx

Love this look together, gives me ideas for my (never worn) tulip romper. I have a similar process in the morning, start with one piece I want to wear, add elements based on shape color and comfort.

wow, beautiful outfit! I thought it was one dress until I actually read the post.
It's so much fun to find new ways to wear clothing items - especially when you didn't actually expect it to work!

great blog.

OMG that is SERIOUSLY beautiful! I'm in love with all the colorful flowers! And can I ask where you got the shoes?

Don't worry about not owning a basic black skirt. I don't own one either ... and never felt to the need. Though I have my eye on this black "coated denim" (whatever that means) skirt! But that's not really basic or classic, I think. Just kind of edgy.
