Bits and Blooms

Spring Camouflage

I found this floral top last week at Salvation Army. Got it half-off for $2. I'm liking it a lot. It’s rayon which is such a light and comfortable fabric, perfect for the beautiful spring-like day we had on Saturday.

Did you know that rayon is made from wood pulp? Unlike most man-made fibers, it's not synthetic... what better way to start off the week than with a fun and random fabric fact!

When our flowering cherry lost its leaves over the winter, we discovered a small nest tucked in its branches. The wee thing is right at eye level but the shrub was so dense with leaves that you couldn't see it. It looks so pretty right now, nestled snugly in all those new blossoms.

Spring Camo Take 2

The plum tree behind me is blooming away too. I wish I liked plums because I’m told that this tree makes really good ones. Oh well, at least Clover and Lucas enjoy them, I’m so glad she didn’t inherit my weird aversion to fruit.

As for fruit I do like, our new little peach tree is happily sprouting leaves, woohoo!

I’d like to think that strands of my hair went into the making of this nest. It sure looks like they did!

Lucas brought a beautiful bunch of blooms back from the farmers’ market Saturday morning. The guy selling the flowers grabbed a piece of newspaper and wrapped them up...

...it happened to be the movie section, which ended up making for a somewhat hilarious bouquet. See what happens when you put a guy in charge of flower wrapping.

In other floral news…

The latest issue of N.E.E.T came out last week and I was featured in the global fashion section in my floral mish-mash outfit, along with several other lovely ladies (including blog buddy Claire looking gorgeous smack dab in the middle).

My age being 37 (when the picture was taken, that is... I just turned 38!), I couldn’t help but notice that I’ve got a good 10+ years on the other gals. This got me to thinking... Gee, I wonder if I’m the oldest person to have been featured in this section? A little back issue sleuthing and it appears I am indeed the oldest woman, though there was a 39 year-old guy from Portland in one of the earlier issues, so I can’t completely claim the title, but still... :P

If I actually felt my age, this might freak me out a little, but I'm still young at heart (Lucas even says I’m like living with a teenager sometimes, haha, I’m pretty sure he does not mean this as a compliment) and I still get carded when I buy beer at the grocery store, well maybe not every time anymore, but often enough ;)

You can check out the new issue of N.E.E.T here and if you don’t already know this wonderful non-profit online magazine, which celebrates grassroots creativity and showcases independent, vintage, eco-friendly and organic designers, shops and artists from all over the world (ok, so I didn't come up with that description on my own, but it's true!), then you should definitely give it a look-see :)

Lovely! I am jealous of those beautiful cherry blossoms. And the flower wrappings crack me up.

Congrats on your NEET feature--you look beautiful, as always! I'm 40 and I'm surprised you are the oldest person featured. I do believe that once you reach a certain age the number becomes meaningless--it's all in your attitude and how you feel!

Your floral rayon top is lovely, and I love your picture in N.E.E.T. Very cool.
But I was really tickled to see that you have a yellow Ransburg bread box just like mine!!

santa rosa has the best springtimes! those blossoms are beautiful and i can just imagine the taste of those plums this summer; plums are my favorite fruit. i have a plum tree which is starting to blossom, so lovely, but unfortunately its fruit is crazy sour.

i saw you in NEET, what an honor to be featured in probably the best "fashion" mag ever. the age thing is so interesting to me...i often wonder why it seems sort of rare to find women in their thirties doing creative DIY stuff. in my group of friends, i often feel just like you did as you looked at that picture...i'm the oldest by a long shot but feel completely comfortable with that because inside i still feel as young and fancyfree as my girlfriends in their early twenties. anyway i think it helps one stay edgy and dynamic and creative, to be surrounded by people with a youthful energy and an interest in doing things in life their own new way, whether its fashion, art, careers, family, love.

You look so young Missa! Where are your wrinkles? I have so many, I have to blame the New Zealand and Australian Sunny-ness. I do so like your top! and congrats on the mag.

I'm shocked you're 38, I thought late twenties at most!!! You lucky girl looking so much younger, having 3 boys so close together has aged me horrifically, I'm 36 but look about 50 some days!!! Congrats on making the NEET feature :-)

i saw you in neet last week, so rad! yeah for being young at heart. i sometimes feel younger now than i did 10 years ago...makes me think of that bob dylan song, "Ah, but I was so much older then I’m younger than that now".

Congrats on your feature!!! I wouldn't have ever pegged you as 38, but I guess you are only as old as you feel (teenager- Haha!)

Congrats on being in the magazine! I thought that was a great outfit as I do this one too! Perfect post for Spring - yours, not mine as it's Autumn, but I'm pretty happy about that :)

Missa, wow!! (i'm laughing a bit now) Geeze - congratulations on the feature! You sure as heck don't look your age, and you sure as heck don't seem like it (and i mean that in a totally good way - i miss my highschool gfs!) you deserve it for doing your own thing and rocking it so, so well!
xoxo!

i have felt like i am about ten years older than many other bloggers and most my customers, too...but it's probably just a matter of perception. in any case, i am pleased as punch if you are representing for us thirty somethings (esp cause you already saw my blog and know about my love for that particular outfit :) ).

i hope you all are having lovely week.

I loved those cherry blossom-nest pictures...I put one up as my computer background at work to keep me cheerful and ready for some real Spring (here in Indiana we've still had some frosty nights).
