Update...

Good news! My sister-in-law Zoe's stolen van was recovered, a bit ransacked, but with no major damage. All her Santa Cruz thrift finds AND my book were still in the van... yay!

I fell in love with this book for its gorgeous melancholy illustrations. It was published in the 60's, my favorite decade in vintage children's books. I'm drawn to the sparse use of color and vaguely haunting images that seem to have been common in children's books of that decade.

Lucas jokes.. ok, "jokes" is probably not the right word... that maybe ALL of Clover's books don't need to be creepy... he may actually have a point there ;)

Good news about the van!

I'm pretty sure I had that book when I was a kid, but I love those really colourful children's books the best - I have a psychadelic Owl & the Pussycat which I really dig.

I love vintage children book illustrations! These are wonderfully charming. I love the last one especially. It would make a great artwork on the wall.

So glad the van got returned and great book! I wonder why is was that books from this decade tended to veer towards the creepy side..

Also, from the look of these two pictures, don't you think it would make a great animated short film? It would be creepy in the best way!

Clover must have quite an enviable book collection :) I really like children's books and illustrations - perhaps I haven't grown up in some way!

These ones do have a haunting and dreamlike quality. They are eerie and quite beautiful and washed out. I think I'm often drawn to those qualities in art.

Glad that the van was found and this great looking book in it!

That's an absolutely beautiful book. I totally agree about the era. Makes me want to start a collection right now for my soon-to-come little one!

yay for the van being recovered and with your items in there! and i think its only recent decades that kids books ARENT creepy! and some of the tales (nursey rhymes etc) are creepy in theme selves so maybe thats why the illustrations were as well, this book's illustrations are beautiful!

Such good news! What a relief that must be for you all.

I absolutely adore '60s children's books (and '70s ones too)! They weren't so PC like the ones today, which I think made for some amazingly original and wonderful artwork for children.
