Ode to Bodega

Over the weekend we headed out to our old stomping grounds of Bodega, Ca. It’s a very small town out in the country passed through when heading west out to the coast. One of those places where everyone knows everyone else and there’s a real sense of community that’s pretty rare these days.

Back in the day, there was such a wonderfully eclectic mix of characters living there… surfers, hippies, artists, fishermen… lots of eccentric types to keep things interesting and then being a quaint stopping point on the way to the beach, you’d get tourists and bikers as well.

Once upon a time, Lucas and I lived behind the general store (big blue building in first photo) in an old water tower converted to a tiny studio, right in the heart of town. This consists of the general store, the surf shop, the teeny coffee shop where Lucas used to work, the post office, firehouse, a handful of shops to entice the tourists, and the social hub, The Casino, a biker bar with two pool tables, ACDC, Patsy Kline, and Bob Marley in heavy rotation on the jukebox and the most impressive collection of taxidermied animal heads you’ve ever seen (not to mention this wallpaper behind the bar)… God I miss that place!

Bodega also has the claim to fame that the famous church and schoolhouse scenes from Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds” were filmed there, and the town is known for being quite haunted. While I can’t back up the haunting claims first hand, I can attest to the fact that the birds in that town are actually quite friendly ;)

All of the above photos are via various flickr photostreams and link to the original source when clicked on. It was funny to randomly come across that photo of the laundry line which I really love, then to read the description and find out that it belongs to my brother-in-law’s mother, haha! It seems the picture was taken by someone just passing through town… small world :)

We were actually there for a party in honor of our old and dear friend Tim’s recent marriage which happened out of state in his lovely bride’s hometown back east. This was a chance to celebrate at home with friends and family.

We had a wonderful time and the setting was absolutely breathtaking, with gorgeous gardens and pastoral views! We got to hang out with so many people we hadn’t seen in years, it was almost like a reunion of sorts. It all brought back memories of a really fun time in my life and we got a chance to show off the little one too :)

Speaking of little ones, I kept trying to take pictures of Tim’s precious daughter in her adorable pink fairy princess dress, but I wasn’t using the flash and she was fluttering about so much that all the photos turned out fuzzy in this really wonderful way. Almost as if she were an actual fairy I had captured :D

This is our good friend Joey, who is someone that we do still see on a regular basis as he lives right down the street from us. He’s posing for this photo to show off his new Missa-thrifted vintage plaid western style shirt, so seasonally appropriate with its orange and brown hues, if I do say so myself, unlike his somewhat inappropriate footwear ;) This is one surfer who lives in flip flops rain or shine!

Then Joey turned the camera on me and I think it’s quite obvious that I’m clearly more comfortable being photographed when it’s just me and my self-timer alone in the backyard ;) Not my most inspired outfit I’ll admit, but I was wearing my recently thrifted cardigan, so there you go.

Also, once the sun went down it was FREEZING cold and I was happy to not be in a dress or skirt. I threw on a knit scarf and hat and was a whole hell of a lot cozier than Mr. Flip Flops I'm sure!

Hope you all had wonderful weekends as well! :)

All the amazing Polaroid photos I keep seeing on flickr and across the blogosphere are leaving me wanting, and this $3 yard sale score is such a beauty!

I dream of an outfit involving these moccasins over a pair of skinny jeans with this t-shirt/cardigan combo, this headband, and my wee medicine bag :)

Cease to resist, giving my goodbye...

Wearing my new tapestry skirt, this felt like my first real outfit of the Fall season. Everything's thrifted except the crocheted hat (made by my mother-in-law back in the day :) and my Pixies concert tee from their show at the Berkeley Greek Theatre back in '04. They're my favorite band of all time and I was so excited when they got back together for that tour. The show was amazing <3

One of my favorite songs and a little farewell to summer...

100% Thrifted Pick of the Week (10.06.08)

Um…. yeah… there are really just no words. This dress is so freaking cool, I don’t even know what to say about it except: Behold the awesomeness that is Caroline’s owl dress!

Actually we were just trying to get Clover to say “owl” tonight and she kept saying “wowl” and that is the perfect word for this WOW of a dress, so let me rephrase: Behold the awesomeness that is Caroline’s WOWL dress ;)

What a happy little scene and POCKETS TOO! This dress is definitely one of those extra special finds and the red belt is the perfect addition, Bravo!

Fall Finds

Turning leaves, the trumpet vine's shriveling blooms, the early setting sun... it seems my yard is full of evidence that Fall has truly arrived. Now, thanks to my latest thrift finds, so is my closet :)

While "camping", Lucas' sister Zoe (also and avid thrifter) and I, hit up a Goodwill in Santa Barbara as well as a cool thrift store called Alpha Thrift in the town of Goleta. Alpha Thrift was huge and had quite a vintage selection. Unfortunately, they also priced many of their vintage pieces accordingly, but still there were good deals to be had.

I lost my receipt from the Goodwill, and there were no price tags on the clothes so sorry no prices for those items. I know I didn't pay more that six bucks for any single item though.

Large vintage Missoni Sport sweater vest (I'm all about the sweater vests for Fall layering) - $3.50 (Alpha Thrift, half-off) and cute lil' Japanese print scarf (I suggest enlarging it to get the full effect of how neat the print really is) - $1.50 (Alpha Thrift). I found these two items completely separately in different locations of the store and was floored by how perfectly the colors go together!

Vintage cardigan - $9.99 (Alpha Thrift). This was actually a bit pricey for me. Usually $10 is kind of my unspoken max when thrifting clothing. So this one just squeaked in, I went back and forth with myself a little then just decided to get it. I love gray and found the design interesting and appealing. Besides, I was on vacation and feeling a bit loose with my money ;)

Small vintage sweater vest, it has little difficult-to-see perforated hearts connecting the diamonds - Santa Barbara Goodwill.

Large woven basket of awesomeness - $3.93 (Alpha Thrift). This find was really cool because Zoe and I had just been in a weird little quasi-thrift shop in Santa Barbara that was filled with really tacky stuff donated new from other retailers. There was hardly anything second hand in the shop and the only thing I saw that I liked was one of these baskets but it was $29 which is not far off from what they cost new, so I passed. I was so excited when I found this one hiding in the back of Alpha Thrift for just under $4! I love the colors and these baskets are so great for storage.

Plaid wool blazer - Santa Barbara Goodwill. Slowly adding to my budding collection of Fall plaids :)

Cozy oversized vintage cardi with neck tie - Santa Barbara Goodwill.

Medium sized vintage mixing bowl with anchor motif - $4.94 (Alpha Thrift). The underside says "TEPCO Verified China Made in U.S.A." and it's quite heavy. I have a thing for vintage bowls and I LOVE the little blue anchor on this one!

I found this set of vintage German puzzle blocks at an antique shop in Cambria. They come with pictures of the 6 different fairytale pictures that can be made. The illustrations are adorable and the whole set is in near perfect condition, so $16.50 seemed like a pretty good deal to me. Now I just have to keep them out of Clover's reach until she's old enough to play without destroying them. We've still got a ways to go ;)

I got these old fashioned bathing beauties postcards on sale in a little shop in Santa Barbara. They weren't thrifted, I got them new, and they're more Summer than Fall-themed but I'm sneaking them in anyway because I think they're pretty cool and I only paid 50 cents each for them :D

I also did some thrifting just before leaving to go on our trip:

High-waist vintage tapestry skirt (those colors!) - $3 (Salvation Army, half-off) and vintage red leather Dior belt - 75 cents (Salvation Army, half-off).

Corduroy vest - $1 (Hospice Thrift).

Vintage boots - $4 (Salvation Army, half-off). These boots are fuzzy on the inside and made of some sort of rubbery faux leather material (kind of a cross between a leather boot and a wellie). There's a tag inside one that says "Jewel Tone Originals". As they're marked guaranteed waterproof on the bottoms, I'm pretty excited about these as my cozy winter rainboots :)

Vintage wool skirt - $3 (Salvation Army, half-off). This skirt is such a classic, I love those three side pleats and that it still has its belt! I think it will be really cute with my new rain boots, some tights and a nice cozy cardi :)

Vintage top - ? lost tag (Salvation Army, half-off). I love this print and the tie sleeves too.

Ok, now I say let the layering begin!
