Shorts Season

Shorts

Patchwork and Pockets

Sunnies Day

Sunday's 100% thrifted outfit, featuring a pair of highwaisted vintage patchwork shorts I picked up for two bucks at the Welfare League Thrift. I've had them for like a month now, but yesterday was my first time wearing them out. They’re made of actual patched together pieces of super soft cotton. Now, if only I had a quilt to match!

I found the little florally-painted ceramic bead necklace on the same thrift outing and I believe it was a two-dollar find as well.

The vintage beaded blouse with little pearl buttons was recently given to me by my mom. It was a flea market find that ended up not fitting her, so lucky me!

Speaking of flea market finds, check out my new vintage sunnies ($3). I have trouble finding sunglasses that I like on me, but I’m diggin’ these ones right now :)

Shorts outfits have been piling up in my inspiration folder (mostly from various street style blogs). I’d been kind of stuck as to how to work my patchwork shorts into an outfit, that is until I came across this look recently which reminded me of the shorts and gave me a shot of inspiration (as you can see, I was inspired by her hair too ;)

Some other looks that inspired the outfit:

Leather belt, white blouse.

Sheer white blouse/black undergarment. That hair! This has to be the same girl.

Sunnies!

Later in the day, the little black flats I was wearing got uncomfortable (still breaking those in) so I switched to my brown leather lace-ups ala this adorable lady (love her floral shorts too).

We set off on a walk to the park to hang out on the sunny lawn, sip cold beers, and catch some free live music with friends and family. Did a little dancing too. I just love watching Clover dance at outdoor concerts, she is the cutest little dancer!

It was a really fun way to end the weekend. Hope you had some fun times this weekend too :D

On The Street

My friend Erin was spotted last week by Work It, Berk, a UC Berkeley based street style blog. She looks fabulous (as usual!) and I love that her picture was posted under the heading: The Girl Who Knew How to Thrift Shop : )

Also, thanks to Erin for mentioning Thrift Candy and Brittany of Work It, Berk for linking to me in her post! Here’s a couple of other looks that I loved from the site:

She’s got an eye for fantastic footwear!

Hey, while I’m on the topic…

Here are some other amazing looks plucked from various street style blogs and deposited directly into my inspiration files, enjoy!

I wanna be THAT mom...

cutie mama

... those were the words that went through my head when I first saw this photo on facehunter. How adorable is she?!

Well, I left the Goodwill today one step closer to making it happen!

And here I was wondering what I was gonna wear to the hippie-fest down the steet this weekend... problem solved!

100% Thrifted Pick of the Week (2.17.09)

day 26. warm! , originally uploaded by garconniere.

I really like how all the pieces in this outfit come together. The contrast between the solid brown trench and the colorful plaid dress is wonderful and I like how garconniere brought out the dress colors with the scarf, tights, and socks too. Not to mention, I’m completely in love with her shoes!

Check out the 100% Thrifted flickr group for more fabulous fully thrifted outfits.

It’s funny, I’ve never really been into trench coats before... not that I didn’t like them, I’ve just been sort of ambivalent toward them. Lately however, they seem to be popping up all over the place and in some really cute ways that have indeed been catching my eye.

Some more girls from street style blogs and wardrobe_remix who have me seeing the trench in a new light:

On my wishlist...

A perfect pair of brown leather lace-up granny ankle boots:

Images: facehunter (1 & 3) and Superfantasticpicturetime (2)

Three inspiring outfits bookmarked over the past months... talk about inspiration to boot ;) I've been searching high and low for a pair for ages now.

Ah, what would thrifting be without that particular type of shoe that continues to elude? There always seems to be one, at least for me there does. These are proving to be especially elusive though, as I've come across next to none that are even the wrong size, which makes finding a pair and having them be my size seem even more daunting.

I'm pretty stubborn when it comes to this sort of thing though so I'll continue to search... refusing to give up hope. Should that change, there's always Etsy (photos link to source):

... oh so tempting!

Parallels in Style

I saw the gorgeous girl in the first photo on face hunter yesterday and did a double take over her dress. It reminds me so much of my clover dress! The print colors and the tightly pleated waistlines. Hers is in much better condition but hey, mine was free!

I love her knit headscarf too!

Now check out this dress from Built by Wendy's current collection and then take a look at my new romper in the post below, notice anything familiar?

Fellow remixer Jean C'est Quoi pointed out in her comment on my w_r post that the print was very much like something Built by Wendy is doing, so I checked out the pieces on their site and was surprised to find not only a very similar print but also this dress... from the waist up in the front, the cuts are identical! How funny we're even wearing similar sunglasses :D

The dress costs a whole lot more than the dollar I paid for my romper though... originally 292 times more to be exact, although at it's current sale price, it's a steal at only 146 times more ;)

It's a cute dress though, makes me want to find a matching skirt to wear over the bottom half of the romper as the weather cools. Hope your having a wonderful weekend!

The Old and the Beautiful

Lately I’ve been appreciating the unique beauty and style of older women… as in much older, and I’m not talking “Granny Chic” in the ironic hipster sense of the phrase. I mean the real deal… chic grannies if you will. Some of my recent flickr faves should help illustrate what I’m getting at:

Margaret, originally uploaded by ZoeRuth.

It all started when I came across Margaret and fell head over heels for this photo by ZoeRuth. It depicts the elderly waitress in such a lovely and charming way.

TR0808G, originally uploaded by Fahim Siddiqi.

1966, originally uploaded by superbomba.

Old Lady, originally uploaded by Shuck.

All four of these women are wonderfully stylish and expressive. Now I’m finding myself admiring stylish old ladies wherever I go.

While I love the way young women look in vintage clothing, there is something so refreshing about seeing an older woman with that hint of retro to her look that comes not from a desire to emulate something from the past, but rather an expression of who she once was carried with her into the present.

These two gorgeous ladies from the Sartorialist are just amazing and perfect examples of the type of look I would love to have someday as an older women. So inspiring!

While I keep hearing about “girl crushes” on the likes of Zooey and Chloe, who are no doubt incredible, what about all the beautiful older women out there? Who’s your “golden girl crush”? Mine would have to be Julie Christie in Away From Her. I loved this film. She is SO good in her Oscar nominated role and AMAZINGLY beautiful, even while playing a woman stricken with Alzheimer’s!

Now, you are probably thinking, what does any of this have to do with thrifting? Well, since you asked, allow me to show you my latest batch of elderly-inspired thrift finds:

Vintage floral tapestry bag ($4, Salvation Army)

Not one but TWO pairs of vintage SAS old lady shoes ($7 each, Goodwill). A bit more than I would normally spend but they were in excellent condition and fit perfectly, something that (as you know) is quite rare for me in a shoe. I was only going to get one pair, but I just couldn't decide which color I liked better, and as it turns out, they both match my new bag perfectly!

And last but not least, a vintage cashmere grandpa cardigan ($2.50, Salvation Army). Believe me, I do know that my acquisition of cardigans appears to be snowballing out of control, but this one so perfectly fit what I was looking for back in this post. I know, I'll stop!
